Jessie’s Light: Turning Grief into a Safe Haven | Lynne's Story

A House Built From Love: Jessie’s Living Legacy

Some stories are born from heartbreak so deep it changes the direction of a life. And sometimes, from that heartbreak, something extraordinary is built.

In this episode of FoundHer, I sat down with Lynne Rosychuck to talk about her daughter Jessie, whose life was taken by domestic violence in 2009, and the living legacy that has grown from unimaginable loss. Lynne’s story is not only one of grief. It is a story of love that refuses to end, and of a mother who transformed pain into protection for others.

Jessie’s Story, Jessie’s Dream

Lynn shared the devastating reality of losing her daughter Jessie despite having a safety plan in place. She and Jessie had been preparing to escape an abusive situation. They researched shelters, safety strategies, and even identified a remote location where Jessie and her children could have been safe. But shelter space was scarce, systems were overwhelmed, and something went tragically wrong.

Writing this chapter was not easy. But Lynne wrote it with one intention: to honour Jessie.

From Grief to Purpose

Out of that unimaginable loss came the Jessica Martell Memorial Foundation, and eventually Jessie’s House, a 9,200 square-foot home designed to be more than a shelter. Jessie’s House is a trauma-informed, fully supported safe haven for women and children fleeing violence. Since opening, it has supported more than 800 women and 1,000 children, offering not just safety, but dignity, stability, and the resources needed to build new lives.

A Community That Showed Up

Lynne spoke with deep gratitude about the community that rallied around this vision. What was initially planned as a smaller space grew into something much larger because people showed up, donated, volunteered, and believed in the mission. Jessie’s House exists because a community decided that safety should not be a privilege. Even now, Lynne continues to see reminders of that support, including rediscovered videos and messages that reinforce just how many lives Jessie touched, directly and indirectly.

Why This Story Matters

Lynne’s story carries an urgent and compassionate message: everyone deserves to be safe. Domestic violence is not a private issue. It is a community issue. And while Lynne would give anything to have her daughter back, she continues to ensure that Jessie’s life, and her dream, saves others.

Volume 3 of The Embers We Carry launches April 11, with proceeds supporting causes like the Jessica Martell Memorial Foundation and stories that remind us what love, courage, and community can make possible.
